Choice Education Progam

Achieve Hartford! believes that effective family engagement is essential to improving student achievement and sustaining reform. 

School choice is where “the rubber meets the road” for how reform impacts families.  But in Hartford, school choice can be extremely complicated – with so many choice options and overlapping application time frames.  Like many reform efforts, choice in Hartford can benefit greatly from a trusted source for clear information.  Here is our 2012 Choice Education Program Guide.

Achieve Hartford!’s Parent Choice Education Program provides a unique service to families in Hartford, and may be the only program of its kind in the country.

Running simultaneously with the Hartford Public School District’s Choice Application process every year, our program ensures that parents of children entering the school system for the first time – or transitioning from one school level to another – have the information they need to make an informed school choice.

This program brings trained Parent Choice Advisers and technology to schools and school readiness programs throughout all Hartford neighborhoods, reaching parents where they congregate on behalf of their children. 

The strengths of the program are three-fold:

• The Collaborative Partnership Model– in which Achieve Hartford! partners with the City of Hartford Office of Young Children and the Hartford Public Schools to conduct parent outreach at dozens of early childhood and community centers and schools.
• The Concept of Parents Educating Parents– with Parent Choice Advisers augmenting our training with their personal experiences, having navigated the school system on behalf of their own children.
• The Ability to Translate Complexity– by providing reader-friendly materials and personal consultations that help parents consider the unique qualities of each school so they can be in a position to decide which school is the best match for their children.
